Smart Device Digest

Every device gets a number, and the number has to be defensible

We buy the units, we keep them for at least three weeks, and we publish the measurements next to the opinion. Scores are out of 10 in five weighted parts. Nothing here is a first-impressions post.

Latest

Northvane R6 mesh router — 7.4

Good roaming behaviour, honest coverage claims, and a web UI that has clearly never met a designer. The 5 GHz backhaul held 640 Mbps through two interior walls, which is the number that actually matters in a rental.

Kessel H4 earbuds — 5.9

The noise cancelling is real, the case hinge is not. Two of our three units developed lid wobble inside a month. We would rather have the plastic and none of the “spatial” processing.

lowpasslu

Tanager A2 air purifier — 8.1

Cheap filters, no subscription, and a clean-air delivery rate that survives contact with a tape measure. It is loud on setting three. Run it on two and stop worrying about it.

sundeep-k

Loomtec PV2 desk lamp — 8.6

Our highest score this quarter, for a lamp. The 2700–5000 K range is smooth, the arm holds position after six weeks of abuse, and there is no app. That last part is a feature.
